Truce finds Scheffler merging Americana with indie rock. The result is an album that swings with an easy grace and a lot of melody. If Tom Petty was a Hüsker Dü fan, it might sound like this.
"The arrangements are lush without sounding complicated, and the melodies are smooth and easy. Scheffler’s musicianship is solid, and the songs are both meaningful and pleasant…“Blue Sky Mess” is a solid indie rock tune. And “I Don’t Love You Like I Should” is absolutely adorable, played on ukulele with accordion accompaniment. Just beautiful."
"A twenty-year wait for an adult, sometimes intimate, set of songs...A very engaging listen…The album could easily sit with Harry Chapin’s Short Stories."
"The title track “Truce” has a sumptuous Tim Hardin beauty musically, with piano notes & acoustic guitar surrounding Scheffler’s pushing voice, sounding strongly like Jules Shear. Most effective. It almost sounds like one of the best Shear songs in ages that Jules never wrote."
"The music has a folk and Americana flavor but of the vibrant yet pastoral variety with immediacy and a spirit of intimacy like Scheffler is hooked into universal human experiences."
"Scheffler’s third album delivers a sound on par with the rootsy jangle of artists like Freedy Johnston and Jules Shear on opening track “Excuse the Mess” and “Punch Line” while flexing more electric musculature on songs like “Basher” and “Carry On Without Me” with its jubilant guitar work."
"The title track is a powerful exploration of the emptiness and disconnection felt after [a] loss…Truce is a strong album..."
"Scheffler focused on a beautiful electro-acoustic sound that forms the basis of Truce… [with] a couple of surprises. One is the Springsteen-like drive of “Punch Line” and the other is the harmonious “We’re All Waiting,” which recalls the best of Ryan Adams, and that’s saying something."

“Scheffler’s vocals are at once stylish and soulful.” —Newsday
“Scheffler can put across a vulnerability that most others barely approach.”
